Exploring Information and Communication Technology Use and Digital Learning in Older Arab Immigrants

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have increased in current times. ICTs come with unique benefits but also with a need for a certain level of competence for use. Older adults in Canada have increased their use of technology. Technology provides many ways to improve healthy aging. This project aimed to better understand the ICT use and needs of Arabic-speaking older adults in Edmonton, Alberta.

We explored the research questions using interviews and focus group sessions with Arabic-speaking older adults. We assessed their challenges in accessing information online and developed a tailored 6-week program to improve digital literacy in partnerships with Islamic Family (IFSSA) and Al Rashid Mosque. The DigComp framework was used to characterize the experiences of participants. This research revealed how participants encountered language barriers and lacked confidence in navigating technology. Peer support and tailored workshops that enabled participation.  Critical conversations about digital agency and the desire to become digital citizens were main findings from this study.
