The Edmonton Neighborhood Study: Promoting Outdoor Mobility via Enhancing Neighborhood Walkability for Racialized Older Women

This multi-phase project examined the impact of neighborhood environments on the life-space mobility of older South Asian and Arab immigrant women living in Edmonton. We also interviewed municipal policy knowledge users to better understand how immigrant older adults are being addressed. Through community-based participatory research, we identified key barriers to mobility and proposed solutions to promote independence.

Currently, we have co-designed the Seniors Thriving, Reaching Out and Growing (STRONG) program with community champions at the Indo-Canadian Women’s Association (ICWA). The STRONG Program is a health promotion program that focuses on preventing frailty and falls, increasing health literacy and addressing loneliness amongst immigrant older South Asian women. The first iteration of the program ran successfully in February and March 2025. Moving forward, we will refine and enhance STRONG to support long-term, sustainable community efforts.
